
The Federal Government has upgraded foremost maritine institution in Nigeria, Maritime Academy of Nigeria,,( MAN), Oron, to a Maritime University and a degree awarding institution.
MAN, Oron, Akwa Ibom State was established in 1988 as a Nautical College, and operated for as a Polytechnic, awarding National Diploma ( ND) and Higher National Diploma ( HND).
According to a statement issued by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board ( JAMB) dated 7th April 2025, Addressed to the Vice Chancellor of the Institution ( though, non for now) , the school is among the 22 upgraded and newly approved universities by the Federal government of Nigeria.
The JAMB letter, JAMB/ADMS/ 133/VOL.111 addressed to the Vice Chancellor of University of Maritime Studies Oron, Akwa Ibom State, reads :
” INVITATION TO AN INTERACTIVE MEETING WITH THE THE BOARD OF ADMISSION PROCESSING FOR 22 UPGRADED AND NEWLY APPROVED UNIVERSITIES”.
” The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) extends it’s warms congratulations to your university on its recent approval by the National Universities Commission ( NUC) to operate as a recognized decree -awarding institution in Nigeria.
” As part of our regulatory mandates to, in conjunction with all tertiary institutions, conduct admissions into tertiary institutions, we are pleased to invite your university to a scheduled meeting as follows: Monday 14th April, 2025, at B.O. Ukeje Auditorium , National Commission for Colleges of Education , plot 829, , Ralph Shodeinde Street , Garki, Abuja.
” The purpose of the interaction is to introduce your university to the regulatory framework guiding admissions processing on the Board’s Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) and also the Integrated Brochure and Syllabus System ( IBASS). More importantly you are to be guided on the proper procedure for recruiting candidates for the 2025 admission.
“Your participation is essentiall in ensuring a smooth and successful integration into the board’s database. We request that you be accompanied by the Registrar and one other appropriate officer of your institution”, the letter said.
The letter was signed by Mohammed A. Babaji , Director Admissions, on behalf of the JAMB Registrarroamreporters.
