The outgoing Director-General, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC),Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu has challenged the media to carry out more advocacy roles as part of measures to curtail the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Speaking on Thursday in Lagos at the 5th Annual Conference of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), Ihekweazu said the role of the media in the ongoing campaign can not be overemphasised.
Represented by a Director, Yahya Disu, Ihekweazu described Covid-19 as “more of a social problem than medical.“
Making reference to the movement of people from one location to the other, the NCDC boss insisted that Covid-19 has more to do with compliance to laid down rules.
He also used the opportunity to brief participants at the conference on the proposed international summit on Primary Health Care scheduled to hold in Abuja.
According to the Federal Government, the proposed summit is expected to leverage on efforts in kicking the wild poliovirus out of the country and the management of COVID-19.
“The overall goal of the summit is to galvanize stakeholders and present a compelling investment case for PHC financing, leveraging on the gains made during the polio eradication to strengthen PHC systems from 2021 to 2030. I am optimistic that this event will be a success and a global agenda to be reckoned with,” Executive Director, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Faisal Shuaib said recently.
