The Director General, National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Joseph Osanipin, on Tuesday led the Vice Chairman and Members of the Senate Committee on Industry to Mikano International Limited Facility in Lagos State for an oversight visit.

The visit was part of an ongoing effort to boost the growth of Nigeria’s automotive sector by supporting local manufacturing and assembly plants.

Speaking at the facility, Senator Isah Shuaibu Lau, Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on industry, commended  Mikano Motors for it’s dedication to Nigeria economy.

He assured of continued legislative support, emphasizing the need to earn the thrust of Nigerians on their products while ensuring the sustainability of their supply chain.

“The National Assembly is committed to providing the necessary support to ensure your continued success. By reducing reliance on imports, we can help Nigeria retain foreign exchange and grow it’s economy” Senator Lau stated.

In the same vein, Senator Victor Umeh, a prominent member of the Senate Committee, expressed his admiration for Mikano’s remarkable transformation from a generator company to a diversified manufacturer. “I have known Mikano since its days of producing generators. It’s wonderful to see how you have evolved your business in Nigeria. Despite the challenges, your growth proves that Nigeria remains a favorable environment for investment and prosperity,” Senator Umeh remarked.

Also speaking at the event, Senator Nelson from Bayelsa East echoed Umeh’s sentiments, praising Mikano for establishing a successful, solid value chain in the industry.

S. Abdulkadir, a representative from Mikano, emphasized Mikano’s commitment to long-term local investment.

“Our chairman has been in Nigeria for over 40 years, and he understands the importance of investing in the local economy and creating job opportunities. It’s not just about trading and leaving; it’s about being part of Nigeria’s growth,” Abdulkadir explained.

He also addressed one of the significant challenges Mikano faces: changing perceptions of locally assembled products.

“In Nigeria, there’s a mindset that foreign-made products are always better. We are working hard to change that narrative by ensuring that our locally assembled vehicles meet the same standards as international brands,” Abdulkadir said.

Mikano Motors serves as a key example of how private sector investment can contribute to Nigeria’s GDP.

With the backing of the NADDC and the Senate Committee, Mikano’s efforts are poised to play a significant role in the country’s economic development and industrial self-reliance.
