The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Tuesday, December 30, made a resounding statement at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, becoming the first team to complete the group stage with a 100 per cent record after a commanding 3–1 victory over Uganda in Fez.
Despite head coach Eric Chelle resting several key players, Nigeria’s squad depth proved decisive against a disjointed Ugandan side.
Paul Onuachu opened the scoring in the 28th minute, ending a four-year international goal drought with a composed finish following a fine assist from Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.
The encounter took a dramatic turn in the 56th minute when Uganda goalkeeper Salim Magoola was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge outside the penalty area. With first-choice goalkeeper Denis Onyango already sidelined by injury, the Cranes were forced to introduce third-choice keeper Nafian Alionzi.
Nigeria capitalised almost immediately. Raphael Onyedika doubled the lead in the 62nd minute with a low effort that slipped through the goalkeeper’s legs, before adding a third five minutes later with a calm side-footed finish to put the contest beyond doubt.
Uganda grabbed a late consolation in the 75th minute through Rogers Mato, but it did little to halt Nigeria’s march as the Super Eagles sealed their fourth-ever flawless group stage campaign at the AFCON.
The emphatic win underlined Nigeria’s title credentials as they head into the knockout rounds brimming with confidence.
