The Akwa Ibom Board of Internal Revenue (BIR) Service is set to generate N43.8 billion as Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) in 2022.
Mr Okon Okon, the Executive Chairman of the board, made this known while interacting with Journalists in Uyo on Friday.
Okon explained that the board would design strategies to deliver on the target and possibly improve on it.
He said that during the year, the board would focus on data/analytics, tax intelligence, automation/digital capability, capacity building, and oil and gas to improve efficiency
“The state-wide IGR target in 2022 is N43.8 billion.
“Let me reiterate that we will design strategy to ensure that we deliver on this target and invariably improve our commonwealth, development and prosperity,’’ Okon said.
He recalled that in 2021, the board focused on implementing version 2.0 of its Corporate Transformation Agenda, code-named REVITA (Revenue and Institutional Transformation Agenda).
He said the agenda led to massive investment in the training of staff, engagement of revenue stakeholders and strengthening the Joint State Revenue Committee to increase tax collection.
Okon said, “Our workforce – our greatest asset, took part in trainings for state-level tax administration organised by USAID with a focus on tax law and related reforms.
“They also took part in annual tax conference, mandatory professional training programmes and the Joint Tax Board training. We also trained Assessment Authorities and Motor Licensing Authorities on direct and road taxes assessment.
“In keeping with our commitment to generate enough revenue, we collaborated with the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Ministry of Transport and security agencies to carry out enforcement of road taxes.’’
Okon added the board engaged businesses and persons in the informal sector to grow the various segments of the taxpayers’ database.nan.
