The race for the Premier League title appears to be tilting firmly in Arsenal’s favour after a dramatic round of fixtures that left Manchester City trailing by nine points while also shaking up the battle for European qualification.
At the London Stadium, it was a frustrating afternoon for Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola as his side were held to a draw by West Ham United.
City dominated possession for large spells but struggled to penetrate a disciplined West Ham defensive block. The Hammers took the lead through a swift counter-attack, leaving the defending champions chasing the game for most of the encounter.
Although City managed to rescue a late equaliser, the result felt more like a defeat than a draw. With Arsenal securing victory earlier in the day, City have now dropped five points in their last three matches, raising fresh doubts about their ability to mount a late title charge.
Earlier at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal delivered a composed and professional performance to tighten their grip on the title race.
Forward Viktor Gyökeres continued his impressive scoring run, while the Gunners’ midfield controlled proceedings from start to finish. Goalkeeper David Raya was largely untroubled as Arsenal cruised to another important victory.
The result leaves Arsenal nine points clear at the top of the Premier League table, with the North London side increasingly looking like champions-elect as the season enters its decisive phase.
Meanwhile, the fight for Champions League qualification took another twist at Stamford Bridge where Newcastle United stunned Chelsea with a narrow victory.
Just when it appeared Chelsea were building momentum under manager Liam Rosenior, a defensive lapse early in the second half proved costly. Newcastle capitalised on the mistake to secure all three points, dealing a significant blow to Chelsea’s hopes of finishing in the top four.
With Arsenal pulling away at the summit and several clubs still battling for European places, the closing weeks of the season promise more drama across England’s top flight.
