A senior official of the African Union (AU) has condemned the xenophobic violence in South Africa’s commercial capital, Johannesburg, saying the businessmen who suffered economic losses should get “justice”.
Dozens of people were arrested on Monday after rioters looted shops and torched vehicles.
In a statement, Moussa Faki Mahamat, the chairman of the AU commission, said he was “encouraged” by the arrests.
The South African government should take steps to protect the lives and properties of fellow African nationals, and the AU was committed to helping address the “root causes that led to these despicable acts” of violence, he added.
