Nigeria’s drive to build a sustainable Marine and Blue Economy gained significant momentum as industry leaders, policymakers, researchers, and private-sector players gathered for the inaugural International Conference and Trade Exhibition on Marine and Blue Economy (IMABEC 2025), hosted by the Institute of Maritime Studies, Niger Delta University.
Delivering a goodwill message at the event, the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Dr. Pius Akutah, MON, stressed the central role of strong multi-stakeholder partnerships in unlocking the nation’s Blue Economy potential. Represented by the Director of the Consumer Affairs Department, Mrs. Ify Okolue, Dr. Akutah reaffirmed the Council’s mandate as Nigeria’s Port Economic Regulator and highlighted the strategic importance of the Blue Economy in national development.
He noted that the sector offers expansive opportunities for economic diversification, job creation, enhanced maritime security, and improved community resilience, particularly across the Niger Delta’s coastal corridor. According to him, a well-coordinated approach among stakeholders remains critical to achieving sustainable growth in the emerging sector.
Chairman of IMABEC 2025, Hon. Indutimi Komonibo, also addressed participants, describing the Blue Economy as a transformative frontier that moves Nigeria beyond oil dependency. He outlined key growth areas including innovation, maritime entrepreneurship, coastal infrastructure, renewable energy, fisheries, logistics, and marine tourism—sectors he said are essential to shaping a modern and sustainable maritime ecosystem.
The three-day conference concluded with a colourful gala night celebrating excellence within the maritime industry. Individuals and institutions were recognised for their contributions to strengthening Nigeria’s Blue Economy landscape.
Dr. Pius Akutah received an award for his significant contribution towards efforts in promoting a sustainable marine and Blue Economy, particularly for his leadership in resolving disputes within the maritime community—an effort that has enhanced the visibility and impact of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council.
The Council itself was honoured for Outstanding Service in the Maritime Space, underscoring its growing influence in regulatory efficiency and sectoral development.
Organisers described IMABEC 2025 as a major milestone that deepened dialogue among stakeholders and set a forward-looking agenda for accelerating the growth of a resilient and inclusive Blue Economy, in line with Nigeria’s broader economic diversification goals.
