Edo Deepens EIRS Staff Capacity With Training On New Tax Act

The Edo State Internal Revenue Service (EIRS), in collaboration with the Institute of Revenue Management and Research (IRMR), has concluded a two-day training and capacity-building programme for its management and staff on the New Tax Act, 2025.
Held at the Sunny Okundia Training School, EIRS Headquarters, Benin City, the workshop was themed “Understanding the Future of Taxation under the New Tax Act in Nigeria.”
The programme brought together top management staff and officers from various departments and branches to enhance their understanding of the operational and legal frameworks guiding tax administration under the new law.
Declaring the programme open, the Executive Chairman of EIRS, Otunba Oladele Bankole-Balogun, represented by the Secretary to the Revenue Service, Mrs. Osariemen Ogedegbe, reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to developing a knowledgeable and future-ready workforce. She described the New Tax Act, 2025, as a “turning point in Nigeria’s fiscal policy” and stressed that its successful implementation depends on a professionally equipped and well-informed team.
“This training is an investment in our people and in the future of tax administration in Edo State,” Mrs. Ogedegbe stated. “We must continuously update our knowledge and embrace digital innovation to remain compliant, efficient, and transparent in our operations.”
Representing the IRMR, Hon. Sunday Ereghan commended the EIRS leadership for prioritising capacity development, noting that the collaboration between both institutions underscores a shared dedication to professionalism and institutional strengthening.
“Today’s gathering demonstrates our collective resolve to deepen technical competence and promote excellence in tax administration and management,” Ereghan said. He urged participants to fully engage with the facilitators and apply the insights gained to improve service delivery.
The training featured a robust series of technical and interactive sessions led by seasoned experts, including:
Prof. Ofiafoh Eiya, Professor of Accounting and Taxation, University of Benin, and Lead Facilitator, IRMR;
Ms. Celestina Nwabueze, Managing Associate, Tax and Government Business Practice, Olaniwun Ajayi LP;
Mr. Olushola Ganiyu, Managing Consultant and Head, Business Tax Compliance, KJB Professional Services; and
Mr. Olanrewaju Moshood Lassisee-Philips, former Chairman, Tax Appeal Tribunal, Lagos Zone.

In his closing remarks, Prof. Eiya encouraged participants to obtain personal copies of the Tax Act, 2025 and stay conversant with its provisions. He commended the EIRS Management for its renewed dedication to professionalism, integrity, and excellence in service delivery — values aligned with the agency’s vision of building a modern and efficient tax administration system for Edo State.
