The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to supporting the successful implementation of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda by providing the safety, regulatory and enforcement framework required for the nationwide adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles.
City Business News reports that Mohammed made the commitment on Thursday in Lagos while delivering a keynote presentation at the 3rd Nigeria Auto Industry Summit (NAISU), organised by the Nigeria Auto Journalists Association (NAJA) in collaboration with the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC).
The summit, themed “Nigeria’s Clean Mobility Future: The EV and CNG Journey Under the Bola Tinubu Administration,” brought together policymakers, regulators, automobile manufacturers, energy experts and other stakeholders to chart a sustainable future for Nigeria’s transportation sector.
Presenting a paper titled “The Safety of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Vehicles on Nigerian Roads,” the Corps Marshal said the Tinubu administration’s reforms in the transportation and energy sectors have positioned Nigeria to embrace cleaner, safer and more cost-effective mobility.
He noted that the transition would not only reduce dependence on conventional fossil fuels but also promote environmental sustainability, strengthen energy security and stimulate economic growth.
Mohammed, however, stressed that the success of the clean mobility initiative must be anchored on a robust road safety ecosystem driven by effective regulation, technical standards, public education and emergency preparedness.
According to him, the FRSC has aligned its operations with the Federal Government’s clean energy transportation policy by strengthening vehicle inspection protocols for CNG-powered and converted vehicles, enhancing emergency response capabilities, improving crash reporting through the National Crash Reporting Information System (NACRIS), and intensifying nationwide public enlightenment campaigns on the safe use of emerging vehicle technologies.
He explained that the measures are designed to build public confidence while ensuring that the transition to cleaner transportation does not compromise road safety.
The Corps Marshal disclosed that the FRSC is collaborating with the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG), the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) and other strategic partners to develop a comprehensive framework for the safe deployment of EVs and CNG vehicles nationwide.
He said the collaboration covers the operationalisation of the National Gas Vehicle Management System (NGVMS), development of standard operating procedures, coordinated vehicle inspections, emergency response protocols, dedicated EV and CNG number plates, structured data sharing and sustained public awareness campaigns.
Mohammed also highlighted the functionalities of the FRSC Mobile Application, describing it as an important tool designed to assist motorists in navigating Nigeria’s evolving clean mobility ecosystem.
He further disclosed that the Corps is supporting the pilot deployment of electric vehicles in Abuja while working with relevant stakeholders to ensure that all converted and factory-built CNG vehicles comply with approved safety standards.
According to him, periodic vehicle inspections, certification of conversion centres, specialised training for emergency responders and continuous stakeholder engagement are critical to ensuring a safe and successful transition to alternative fuel transportation.
While highlighting the environmental and economic benefits of EVs and CNG vehicles, the Corps Marshal emphasised that innovation must always be matched with responsibility.
He urged vehicle owners, transport operators, conversion centres and other industry players to adhere strictly to approved safety standards, stressing that public safety remains the cornerstone of Nigeria’s clean mobility journey.
Mohammed commended President Bola Tinubu for what he described as his visionary leadership in driving Nigeria’s clean energy transition, noting that the administration’s investment in alternative fuel transportation would reduce transportation costs, improve energy security, create jobs, stimulate local automotive development and position Nigeria among the leading countries embracing sustainable mobility.
He assured Nigerians that the Federal Road Safety Corps would continue to provide the technical leadership, regulatory oversight and operational support required to ensure that the Renewed Hope Agenda on clean transportation delivers lasting economic, environmental and road safety benefits.
