Nigerian international Alex Iwobi scored the decisive goal as Fulham secured a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Hull City at Craven Cottage on Saturday, October 17, ending their winless run in the Premier League and easing pressure on manager Álvaro Arbeloa.
Iwobi struck in the 33rd minute to give Fulham a much-needed victory after six league matches without a win, lifting the club out of the relegation zone in the 2026/27 season.
However, the hosts had to withstand a tense finish after substitute Ryan Sessegnon was sent off in stoppage time, leaving Fulham to protect their slender advantage with 10 men.
Fulham started brightly, dominating possession and putting the visitors under pressure from the opening minutes. Iwobi came close to opening the scoring early on but failed to hit the target.
The breakthrough arrived when Hull defender Brooke Norton-Cuffy failed to clear the ball effectively inside his penalty area. Sander Berge recovered possession and laid it off for Iwobi, whose low shot slipped through goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis’ hands and into the net.
The goal rewarded Fulham’s positive start and provided a timely boost for a side struggling to turn promising performances into results.
After the break, Fulham continued to create opportunities but failed to extend their lead.
Josh King came close to making it 2–0, only for Tzolakis to produce an important save. Iwobi also threatened again, finding space inside the penalty area before the Hull goalkeeper denied him.
The Nigerian midfielder later turned provider in the 74th minute, delivering an excellent cross that Gonzalo García met with a header. The effort beat Tzolakis but struck the crossbar, leaving Fulham frustrated at their inability to secure a more comfortable advantage.
Hull struggled to create consistent attacking opportunities but remained in contention because of Fulham’s wastefulness in front of goal.
The contest took another turn in stoppage time when Sessegnon received a straight red card for a late challenge on Hull substitute Robinio Vaz.
The dismissal increased the pressure on the hosts, who were forced to defend their narrow lead with a numerical disadvantage.
Hull attempted to capitalise, but Mohamed Belloumi sent a late free-kick over the crossbar as Fulham held on to claim all three points.
The victory was particularly significant for Arbeloa, whose position had come under scrutiny following Fulham’s disappointing start to the campaign. The club had recorded four defeats and two draws in their opening six league matches before Saturday’s encounter.
Iwobi’s decisive contribution finally delivered the breakthrough the manager needed, providing some breathing space ahead of Fulham’s next fixtures.
Despite the victory, Fulham will need to improve their finishing and game management if they are to build on the result. Their failure to convert several opportunities nearly allowed Hull to snatch a point in the closing stages.
For Iwobi, the goal further underlined his importance to Fulham, with the Nigerian midfielder combining technical ability, movement and creativity to influence the outcome of a crucial fixture.
His performance will also be encouraging for Nigerian football supporters as the Super Eagles look ahead to their upcoming international commitments.
Hull, meanwhile, will be disappointed by their inability to take advantage of Fulham’s missed chances and late dismissal. Their defensive lapse leading to Iwobi’s goal proved costly, while their limited attacking threat left them with little opportunity to recover.
Manager Sergej Jakirovic will now be expected to address his side’s attacking shortcomings as they seek to bounce back from the defeat.
Fulham will hope the victory marks the beginning of a revival rather than a temporary reprieve, with an away fixture against Coventry City scheduled for October 24.
For now, Iwobi’s first-half strike has delivered a valuable three points, offered Arbeloa some relief and given Fulham renewed hope of moving further away from the relegation zone.
