The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has inducted the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye, as a Special Traffic Mayor, further strengthening collaboration between the health and traffic management sectors in the state.
The induction ceremony, which took place on Monday in the conference room of the Ministry of Health, was conducted by officers of the Traffic Advocacy and Special Traffic Mayor Department of LASTMA, led by Deputy Comptroller, Jimmy Awoyemi, the Heads the Department, who officially decorated Dr. Ogboye with the Traffic Mayor uniform.
In his address, Awoyemi highlighted the critical role of the Special Traffic Mayor, emphasising that the initiative seeks to enlist high-ranking government officials in traffic advocacy and public enlightenment.
He urged Dr. Ogboye to serve as a committed ambassador for LASTMA, advocating for safer roads and improved traffic management across Lagos State.
“Our mission today is to formally induct and decorate the Permanent Secretary as a Special Traffic Mayor.
This follows the launch of the LASTMA Mayor’s Kit last December. We believe traffic management is a collective responsibility, and we need the support of senior government officials to improve our services and enhance road safety,” Awoyemi stated.
Accepting the honourary role, Dr. Ogboye commended the dedication of LASTMA officers, acknowledging the challenges they face in the line of duty.
He expressed his appreciation for their service and assured them of his commitment to promoting their cause as a Special Traffic Mayor.
“A lot of people complain about LASTMA, and I see these complaints online. However, what many don’t realize is the risks you take daily. I have personally received distress calls about officers being attacked while on duty. Your work is crucial to maintaining order, and I commend you for your resilience,” Dr. Ogboye remarked.
He further assured LASTMA of his support, pledging to use his new position to enhance public perception of the Agency and advocate for better working conditions for its officers.
He also called on residents of Lagos to respect and cooperate with traffic management officials to ensure smoother road operations.
The Special Traffic Mayor initiative is part of LASTMA’s strategy to foster collaboration between government agencies and the public in tackling Lagos State’s notorious traffic challenges. By inducting senior officials as advocates, the Agency hopes to create stronger policy backing and broader public awareness of traffic regulations.
With Lagos’ rapid urbanization and increasing vehicular movement, LASTMA continues to play a pivotal role in enforcing traffic laws and ensuring free-flowing roads. The inclusion of key figures like Dr. Ogboye in its advocacy network marks another step towards a more coordinated approach to traffic management in the state.
Dr. Ogboye’s induction as a Special Traffic Mayor reinforces the Lagos State Government’s commitment to inter-agency cooperation, aligning health and traffic management in a bid to improve safety and efficiency on the roads.
The ceremony was graced by top officials from the Lagos State Ministry of Health and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority among others.
