Motorists and passengers across the country have applauded the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for its Free Water Campaign, describing the initiative as a thoughtful and timely intervention that enhances safety and provides relief for highway users during the busy Yuletide travel season.
According to a statement by the Corps, the initiative was introduced by the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, and implemented across major highways and travel corridors nationwide.
City Business News reports that FRSC operatives were deployed to distribute bottled water to motorists and passengers, a move aimed at combating fatigue, dehydration and stress often associated with long-distance festive journeys.
Speaking on the rationale behind the initiative, the Corps Marshal underscored its life-saving intent, noting that road safety transcends enforcement alone.
“Road safety goes beyond enforcement; it is about caring for the people we serve. A refreshed and alert driver is a safer driver, and if offering something as simple as water can help save lives on our roads, then it is a responsibility we must embrace,” he said.
Beyond being a goodwill gesture, the Free Water Campaign reflects the Corps Marshal’s forward-thinking approach to road safety, recognising that alertness, wellness and human care are critical components of crash prevention, particularly during periods of heavy vehicular movement such as the festive season.
Motorists and passengers who benefited from the initiative openly commended the FRSC, describing the gesture as thoughtful, refreshing and unprecedented. Many praised the Corps for going beyond routine enforcement to demonstrate genuine concern for the welfare of road users, noting that the exercise boosted morale, reduced tension on the highways and strengthened public trust in the agency.
The water distribution exercise also served as an avenue for road safety education, as FRSC personnel used the opportunity to sensitise motorists on the dangers of speeding, fatigue-induced driving, overloading and other reckless behaviours, which are major contributors to road crashes during festive periods.
The Yuletide intervention has continued to attract widespread public admiration and positive reactions, further reinforcing the FRSC’s reputation as a proactive life-saving agency committed to placing the welfare of Nigerians at the centre of its operations.
As festive travels continue nationwide, the Federal Road Safety Corps has reassured Nigerians of its unwavering commitment to ensuring safer roads and safer journeys, while urging all motorists to remain patient, alert and law-abiding at all times.
The statement was signed by Olusegun Ogungbemide, Assistant Corps Marshal and Corps Public Education Officer.
