The Director General, National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Oluwemimo Joseph Osanipin has laid out a transformative vision for Nigeria’s motorcycle and 3-wheeler industry centered on local component production.
In his address at the Annual General Meeting of the Motorcycle Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN), on Tuesday in Lagos,Osanipin emphasized on the critical role that motorcycles and tricycles play in bridging transportation gaps across Nigeria, particularly in underserved and remote areas.
He highlighted the industry’s heavy reliance on imported components as a major vulnerability, exposing it to foreign exchange volatility and supply chain disruptions.
“A paradigm shift towards local components production is not just desirable but essential.
“We must work together to make Nigeria a hub for mortocycle and 3- wheeler manufacturing in Africa” he urged, calling for unity among industry stakeholders,
Osanipin also emphasized on the need to implement a Motorcycle/Tricycle Components Deletion Programme, a phased initiative designed to identify and replace imported parts with locally manufactured alternatives.
The programme includes component mapping, phased deletion, targeted incentives for local producers, and rigorous quality assurance protocols.
In addition to policy initiatives, Osanipin also introduced the NADDC-CREDICORP Vehicle Financing Scheme, which aims to improve affordability and access to locally produced motorcycles and tricycles through low-interest financing. Registered MOMAN members will benefit directly from the scheme, as well as from other NADDC programs.
Representing the Director General of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Mr. Segun Ajayi-Kadir, Mrs. Oluchi Odimuko also addressed the gathering.
She commended the NADDC’s revitalized efforts and stressed the need for a more inclusive Nigerian Automotive Policy that actively supports all sub-sectors, including motorcycles and tricycles.
“This subsector is critical not only to transportation but also to industrial growth, employment, and local value addition,” Odimuko said.
She encouraged the incoming MOMAN leadership to drive innovation, deepen collaboration, and champion strategic investments.
Also recognized were the contributions of Mr. Robert Ugbaja, Esq., Chairman of MAN’s Motor Vehicle and Miscellaneous Assembly Sectoral Group, and Reverend Lambert Ekewuba, Executive Director of the Motorcycle and Tricycle Subgroup, for their leadership and commitment to sector growth.
