New Land Rover Defender Debuts

Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) manufacturer, Land Rover has unveiled the new-generation Defender  that comes with a completely redesigned appearance.

Based on the D7x architecture, the SUV is claimed to be capable of to withstand extreme road and weather conditions and it will be available in 128 global markets, informs the company in a release. The automaker also claims that it has conducted 62,000 tests on the SUV, across different conditions.

Land Rover claims the new-generation Defender comes with a maximum payload of up to 900 kg and it has a towing capacity of 3,720 kg. Also, the SUV has 290 mm of ground clearance and a wading depth of up to 900 mm, which makes it a tough and agile off-roader.

Like the other contemporary Land Rover SUVs, the new Defender gets advanced technologies in order to make off-roading easier. The SUV comes with the automaker’s famous Terrain Response 2 technology. Also, it gets new Pivi Pro infotainment system with an intuitive interface that gets OTA update function.

Another interesting fact about this SUV is the electrified powertrains, as the new Defender gets advanced mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid tech along with conventional petrol and diesel engines.

Speaking about the design, the new model comes carrying the iconic elements of the Defender, but there are a host of distinctive features as well. It gets minimal front and rear overhangs increasing approach and departure angles.

Commenting on the SUV, Gerry McGovern, Chief Design Officer, Land Rover, said, “The new Defender is respectful of its past but is not harnessed by it. This is a new Defender for a New Age. Its unique personality is accentuated by its distinctive silhouette and optimum proportions, which make it both highly desirable and seriously capable – a visually compelling 4×4 that wears its design and engineering integrity with uncompromised commitment.”

Speaking about the powertrain of the SUV, the petrol engines include a P300 four-cylinder unit and a P400 six-cylinder motor as well. Both of them are combined with mild-hybrid EV technology. Diesel lineup comes with options of D200 and D240 four-cylinder engines.
