The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has deployed electric vehicles (EVs) for airside operations across Nigeria’s five international airports — Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Enugu.
The agency explained that milestone marks the first-ever deployment of EVs in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
According to the Agency, the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes clean energy adoption and climate resilience across key sectors of the economy.
According to NiMet, the new electric vehicles — capable of covering up to 200 kilometers on a single charge — will operate with dedicated charging stations installed at each airport, creating a practical and eco-friendly ecosystem that supports daily operations without dependence on fossil fuels.
Beyond its environmental benefits, the introduction of EVs will enhance NiMet’s operational performance by improving airside logistics, reducing fuel-related downtime, and cutting maintenance and running costs. The agency says this will lead to more reliable, timely, and energy-efficient service delivery in weather observation, data collection, and aviation safety.
By minimizing emissions and operational expenses, NiMet will be able to redirect resources toward its core mandate — including weather forecasting, climate monitoring, and aviation safety enhancement.
The agency explained that the transition to electric vehicles offers multiple long-term benefits: zero carbon emissions, lower maintenance requirements, reduced noise pollution, and improved energy efficiency, all of which align with Nigeria’s national carbon credit targets and global sustainability standards.
This initiative also reflects the vision of NiMet’s Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Charles Anosike, whose leadership has been marked by a strong commitment to innovation, sustainability, and modernization.
“This move reflects our commitment to a cleaner, more efficient future for aviation operations in Nigeria,” Professor Anosike said. “NiMet is proud to lead by example in advancing green growth, climate action, and sustainable service delivery.”
