NNPC: Gas Transportation Network Available To Power Plants Nationwide

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has said its gas transportation network remains fully available to support deliveries to power generating stations nationwide, dismissing suggestions that transportation constraints are responsible for the current decline in electricity generation.
NNPC said the operational records of its subsidiary, NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited (NGIC), showed no transportation-related constraints within its network that could explain the drop in power generation.
The company reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s gas development and monetisation agenda, noting that the initiative had contributed to about 10 per cent growth in gas production volumes in 2026 year-to-date.
It maintained that gas supply availability was not a challenge, adding that it remained committed to supporting efforts to improve electricity generation through safe, reliable and efficient gas supply and transportation.
The clarification followed a statement by the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) on November 5, 2026, which identified limited gas availability and reduced water inflows to hydroelectric stations as factors responsible for lower electricity generation.
However, NNPC clarified that its position specifically addressed the operational status of NGIC’s gas transportation network, stressing that gas production, commercial supply arrangements and actual deliveries to individual power plants were separate components of the gas-to-power value chain.
According to the company, a comprehensive assessment of the current generation shortfall must also examine the availability and operational readiness of generating units, plant maintenance schedules and actual gas offtake.
It explained that these factors determine the extent to which available gas supplies can be converted into electricity and should be verified alongside gas supply data to establish the underlying causes of the shortfall.
NNPC called for a coordinated review of operational data involving gas suppliers, transporters, power generators and NISO to identify specific constraints and determine appropriate interventions.
The company stressed that accurate reporting across the gas-to-power value chain was essential to addressing the challenges and sustaining public confidence.
It reiterated its commitment to dependable energy infrastructure and constructive collaboration to ensure that Nigeria’s abundant gas resources translate into more reliable electricity supply for Nigerians.
The statement was signed by NNPC Limited’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh.
