The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) is to restructure Ikorodu Lighter Terminal as part of measures to ensure its effective utilization.
Inspecting operations at the Terminal, NPA’s Board chairman, Emmanuel Adesoye, described the facility as a “Gold Mine”, adding that the Authority must find a way to put it into good use.
Accompanied by other Board members, Mr Adesoye said Management is to encourage export trade through the terminal especially agricultural produce with a view to making the location a notable Maritime Hub in the sub region “while enhancing industrialisation which would in turn also yield more dividends at this critical time facing the nation”.
The development, according to Adesoye is also expected to create employment for Nigerians, adding that there is need for all stakeholders in the Maritime Sub-sector to form a common goal towards making the port industry choice destination.
He identified issues bordering on the adherence to occupational, health and safety as panacea to efficient Port services in line with international best practices.
A statement issued by NPA’s General Manager (Public Affairs), Chief Michael Ajayi quoted Adesoye as saying management was “desirous of ensuring that the mission of the organisation which is To deliver Efficient Port Services in a safe, secure and customer friendly environment was brought to bear at all times”.
