The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has commenced an investigation into the runway incident involving a Dana Air aircraft at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on Tuesday morning.

A Dana aircraft with registration number 5N BKI, flying from Abuja to Lagos, overshot the runway while attempting to land at the airport.

Reacting to the incident, the Director, Public Affairs, NSIB, Wunmi Oladeji, said the agency had begun a probe of the incident.

“Our investigators are currently on the site of the incident. They are investigating it. We will rely on their report to give the next update,” she said.

The incident happened around 10:15 a.m., with emergency responders, including the airport’s Aerodrome Rescue and firefighting services mobilised to the scene to save the situation. The aircraft had 83 passengers and flight crew aboard.

The airline’s Head, Corporate Communication, Kingsley Ezenwa, while confirming the incident, expressed relief that there was no casualty as all passengers and crew onboard the flight disembarked safely.

Meanwhile, Dana Air has apologised to its passengers and is re-timing flight operations following the incident of one of its aircraft skidding off the Lagos Airport runway.

Extending the airline’s apologies, Ezenwa said the earlier incident where an aircraft with registration number, 5N BKI veered off the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos, caused the flight disruptions.

“Dana Air has extended its sincerest apologies to all passengers affected by the recent schedule disruption resulting from the runway excursion involving one of its aircraft at Lagos airport.

“We understand the frustration and inconvenience experienced by passengers whose travel plans were disrupted due to the incident and we are deeply sorry,” he said.

According to him, remaining flights for the day have all been retimed and the passengers on these flights have been updated via email, sms and calls.

He re-assured affected passengers that the airline was working diligently to minimise disruption and accommodate their travel needs.

”We commend the experience, professionalism and swift response demonstrated by our crew in handling the runway excursion incident,”
