The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), led by its Director-General/Chief Executive Officer, Capt. Alex Badeh Jnr, has undertaken a technical visit to the UK Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) for a peer review and strategic capacity-building engagement.
According to NSIB, the
visit was aimed at fostering institutional partnership to strengthen rail accident investigation capabilities, promote knowledge exchange and explore globally recognised rail safety investigation frameworks for possible adaptation within Nigeria’s rail sector.
According to the Bureau, the engagement will help deepen technical expertise, enhance investigative standards and minimise rail transportation occurrences across the country.
During the interaction, discussions centred on investigative methodologies, safety reporting systems, human factors analysis, and the operational independence required for effective accident investigation.
The visit also provided an opportunity for NSIB officials to understudy RAIB’s systems, processes and case management structures.
The initiative underscores NSIB’s commitment to raising safety standards across all modes of transportation in line with its expanded multi-modal mandate, which covers air, rail, marine and other transport systems.
By aligning with globally established best practices, the Bureau aims to strengthen public confidence in Nigeria’s transportation safety architecture while contributing to the prevention of future incidents through robust, data-driven investigations and safety recommendations.
Industry stakeholders have described the engagement as a strategic step toward building a more resilient and internationally benchmarked rail safety investigation framework for Nigeria.
