Onyung Succeeds Ogbeifun As President Nigeria’s Ship Owners Association

The Ship Owners Association of Nigeria (SOAN), on Tuesday elected  a Medical Doctor, Mkgeorge Onyung as  successor to its outgoing President,  Engr Greg Utowen Ogbeifun. 

The election which held at the Avenue Suites in Victoria Island Lagos, also saw the outgoing President, pledging to dedicate his contacts, time and resources, to the success of the incoming leadership. 

Returning Officer, Barrister (Chief) Margaret Orakwusi who declared the results, announced Dr. Onyung as scoring 12 votes, to beat his co- contestant, Engr. Alfred Okoigun, who polled 10 votes.

She also announced Mr. Eno J Williams as  having emerged the 1st Vice President, with 22 votes; just as Mr. Sonny Eja also emerged the 2nd Vice President, with 22 votes too.

The body of Nigerian ships owners similarly elected by 22 Votes, a new Financial Secretary/ Treasurer, Mr. Babalola Adefarati;  as Engr. Lucky Akhiwu and Engr. Stan B. Athekame, contesting for the portfolio of Chairman, Technical Committee had a tie because both garnered 11 votes each!

A rerun election was immediately held, shortly after which Engr. Lucky Akhiwu,  scored 12 votes, to beat his co-contestant, who obtained 10 votes!

Meanwhile, SOAN for the next two years, would have Mr. Wisdom Nwagwu as Chairman, Training and Capacity Building Committee; Dr. Louis Ekere as Chairman, Ethics and Privileges Committee; and Mrs. Iroghama Obuoforibo as Chairman, Finance and Membership Committee; as each of them polled and won by 22 votes!

The date for the inauguration of the new Executive body will be announced, soon.
