The Nigeria Police Force has announced plans to resume the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy, pending the final determination of the matter currently before the court.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police explained that the decision followed a careful review of emerging security concerns and the need to ensure the safety of lives and property across the country.
The Force clarified that at no time did any court restrain it from enforcing the provisions of the law regulating the use of tinted glass on vehicles. However, in the interest of responsibility, transparency and public convenience, enforcement was earlier suspended to allow motorists sufficient time to regularise their documentation and complete the registration process without undue pressure.
According to the Police, recent trends have revealed a disturbing rise in criminal activities carried out with the aid of vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass. The statement noted that some individuals and organised criminal groups have exploited the situation to conceal their identities and facilitate crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent offences.
“In view of this development, the Nigeria Police Force has found it both necessary and urgent to resume full enforcement as a proactive measure to safeguard our communities,” the statement said, adding that enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy will officially resume on January 2, 2026.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, assured members of the public that the renewed enforcement would be carried out with the highest level of professionalism, respect for citizens’ rights and in strict compliance with extant laws. He reiterated the Force’s commitment to promoting public safety, upholding the rule of law and working collaboratively with relevant stakeholders to keep the country secure.
Meanwhile, motorists who require Tinted Glass Permits have been advised to apply through approved channels and ensure that their vehicles fully comply with existing legal requirements ahead of the resumption date.
