The Shipping Correspondents Association of Nigeria (SCAN) has announced plans to host its Dockworkers’ Day 2026 on May 28, as part of efforts to recognise the vital contributions of Nigerian dockworkers and promote sustainable practices in the nation’s seaports.
The event, scheduled to hold at Rockview Hotels, Apapa, Lagos, by 10:00 a.m., will centre on the theme: “Green Ports: Sustainable Practices for Dockworkers.” It is expected to bring together key stakeholders across the maritime industry, including policymakers, industry leaders, and environmental advocates.
According to SCAN, this year’s celebration will spotlight the growing importance of environmentally friendly operations and modern technologies in port activities, in line with global sustainability standards. The Green Port initiative, the association noted, is designed to improve the environmental performance of seaports while sustaining economic growth and facilitating trade.
In a statement jointly signed by SCAN Chairman, Moses Ebosele, and Organising Committee Chairman, Yusuf Babalola, the association described Dockworkers’ Day as a platform to both celebrate dockworkers and address pressing environmental concerns in the maritime sector.
“SCAN Dockworkers’ Day serves as a platform to acknowledge the essential contributions of dockworkers to our economy, while also addressing the urgent need for sustainable practices in our ports,” the statement read.
“As the shipping industry evolves, it is crucial that we equip our dockworkers with the knowledge and tools necessary to thrive in a green economy,” it added.
The organisers disclosed that the President of the Nigerian Chamber of Shipping, Alhaji Aminu Umar, will deliver the keynote address, while the Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress and former President-General of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, will chair the occasion.
Goodwill messages are expected from top industry leaders, including the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, and the Acting Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, among others.
The event will also feature panel discussions and networking sessions aimed at exploring sustainable maritime practices and the future of dockworking in Nigeria.
SCAN called on all maritime stakeholders—including government agencies, shipping companies, the Nigeria Customs Service, freight forwarders, and the general public—to participate in the event and contribute to shaping a more sustainable future for Nigeria’s port industry.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to promoting collaboration within the maritime sector and enhancing public understanding of shipping and port-related issues.
