The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has directed Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) to immediately suspend the implementation of its newly introduced shipping tariff, as concerns mount across Nigeria’s maritime sector over the proposed charges.
In a letter dated March 23, 2026, titled “Re: Suspension of Tariff Approval” and referenced MSC/RSD/M4/044/VOL/124, the Council reiterated its earlier directive halting the tariff increase and urged the global shipping firm to comply without delay.
The correspondence, signed by the Director of the Regulatory Services Department, Margaret Ogbonnah, on behalf of the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Council, Pius Akutah, was addressed to the Managing Director of MSC.
According to the Council, MSC is required to maintain the current tariff structure pending the outcome of a forthcoming stakeholders’ meeting, which will deliberate on the proposed tariff adjustments and their potential impact on port users and the wider maritime value chain.
The Council emphasized the need for due consultation and engagement with industry stakeholders before any changes to shipping tariffs can be implemented.
“The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has formally requested your organization to abide with current tariff suspension until NSC organizes a stakeholders meeting soonest. Please accept the assurances of the Executive Secretary/CEO’s esteemed regards,” the letter stated.
The directive comes amid growing apprehension among port users, freight forwarders, and other stakeholders, who have raised concerns over the timing and possible economic implications of the proposed tariff increase.
