Welfare Board Holds First Virtual Meeting With Nigerian Seafarers

The National Seafarers Welfare Board (NSWB) would today, April 23, 2020 at 11am address the challenges and fears of Nigerian seafarers offshore and ashore in the face of the COVID -19 pandemic, to provide them the necessary support for the sustenance of international trade.

 The meeting would hold via an Instagram Live Chat @maritimetv.news.

 The live discourse which is put together by Maritime TV debuts on one of the online channel’s premium shows tagged Live Conversations, and would have seafarers as well as relevant stakeholders connect from all over the world, the organisers have said.

 According to a statement from the organisers, ” Otunba Kunle Folarin, Chairman of the NSWB would address the concerns of seafarers during the live meeting to intimate them and other relevant stakeholders with processes that have being put in place, at this time, for seafarers wellbeing while also stating the position/efforts of government , shipowners as well as the Board.”

 Maritime TV disclosed that the NSWB will speak to issues regarding “seafarers welfare, Government’s roles, Employers Obligations, specific welfare demands by seafarers and regulations by International Labour Organisation and also give an update on the status of the National Seafarers Development Program by Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).”

 It will be recalled that the International Labour Congress had called on nations to accord seafarers the utmost respect and ensure that issues like the travel restrictions imposed as a result of the pandemic do not affect crew changes and the well-being of seafarers who the group referred to as “key workers.”
