German prosecutors investigating the Volkswagen AG diesel-rigging scandal have again expanded the criminal fraud probe by adding another suspect, bringing the total number of people under investigation to 38.

Braunschweig prosecutors, who are conducting three related probes, have steadily increased the list of suspects, adding former chief executive officer Martin Winterkorn to the fraud investigation in January.

Klaus Ziehe, a spokesman for the law-enforcement agency, declined to identify the new suspect or comment on his role at the company.

VW faces an ever increasing number of probes at home and abroad after it admitted in September 2015 that about 11 million diesel vehicles worldwide were sold with so-called defeat devices.
