After a meeting with the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Hyundai is recalling 41,000 2016 Tucsons for a potentially faulty accelerator pedal.
The recall involves certain 2016 Tucsons equipped with a dual-clutch transmission produced between May 20, 2015, and May 31, 2016.
According to NHTSA, in higher ambient temperatures and specific operating conditions, the transmission clutch application logic can result in a delayed engagement when accelerating from a stop..
It explained that If the accelerator pedal is steadily depressed for approximately 1.5 to 2 seconds, the vehicle will begin to accelerate. However, if the pedal is repeatedly cycled, NHTSA noted, the vehicle will not accelerate.
In June, Automotive News explained that Hyundai began investigating customer reports on certain Tucsons but found the condition to be intermittent and often not repeatable.
The automaker’s investigation continued and a software update was developed, tested and made available in August.
Hyundai released a service bulletin on Aug. 10 and continued to study field reports.
However, Hyundai also met with NHTSA that day and the issue was discussed.
On Aug. 22, Hyundai decided to recall the impacted Tucsons.
Hyundai will notify owners and dealerships will update the transmission control module software for free. The recall began on September 7, 2016..
The automaker said it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the recall.
