The Federal Government (FG) through the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (Pi-CNG & EV) has commenced investigations, in collaboration with relevant authorities, into the cause of a vehicle explosion at a Kaduna motor park on Sunday.
The incident has triggered a joint probe involving state and federal agencies, as the initiative seeks to establish the circumstances surrounding the explosion.
In a statement signed by its Head of Brand and Communications, Onyekachi Eke, on behalf of management, Pi-CNG & EV urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation while investigations are ongoing.
The organisation expressed deep concern over the incident and extended solidarity to those affected, noting that no official cause has yet been determined.
“At this time, there is no confirmed information on the specific cause of the incident, as investigations are ongoing,” Eke stated.
“The Initiative is working closely with relevant state and federal authorities to establish the facts.”
Eke emphasised that compressed natural gas (CNG) has maintained a strong safety record in Nigeria and globally, with years of usage across parts of the country without similar incidents.
She reiterated that CNG remains a safe, reliable, and cost-effective fuel alternative, with added environmental benefits, including improved air quality.
“We urge the public to remain calm and avoid speculation or sensational reporting while investigations are ongoing,” she added.
The initiative also reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the highest safety standards across the sector, pledging to work with stakeholders to prevent future occurrences.
Eke cautioned against sensationalism during the probe and assured that updates would be communicated as more details emerge from the investigation.
Pi-CNG & EV, inaugurated in July 2023 by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is driving Nigeria’s transition to cleaner energy in transportation, with a target of converting one million vehicles to CNG within three years.
The programme is part of broader efforts to leverage Nigeria’s abundant gas resources to reduce transportation costs by up to 70 per cent following the removal of fuel subsidies.
