ECOWAS Harps On Cross-Border E-Commerce, Digital Trade

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission and Member States are intensifying efforts to strengthen cross-border digital trade, improve market access and promote inclusive economic growth through the implementation of the ECOWAS E-Commerce Strategy (2023–2027).
This formed the focus of the Second Meeting of the Regional ECOWAS E-Commerce Committee, held in Abuja, Nigeria.
The meeting built on the E-Commerce Community Forum held from October 27 to 28, as part of efforts to translate regional policy commitments into practical measures capable of expanding digital commerce across West Africa.
Speaking at the meeting, Mr Chike Maikami, representing Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment; Mr Kolawole Sofola, Director of Trade at the ECOWAS Commission, who spoke on behalf of the Commission’s President, H.E. General Birame Diop; and Madam Fatou Diop, representing Senegal and chairing the meeting, emphasised the need for stronger institutions, trusted digital transactions and efficient trade systems to unlock the region’s e-commerce potential.
They stressed that creating an enabling digital environment was critical to helping businesses access new markets, expand their operations and participate more effectively in the regional economy.
The Committee reviewed progress in implementing the regional strategy, with particular attention to strengthening digital trade facilitation, developing a regional e-commerce observatory and improving access to market information.
Participants also examined challenges limiting the participation of women, young people, persons with disabilities and small businesses in the digital economy.
The discussions further highlighted the importance of strengthening engagement with Member States and ensuring that regional policy commitments translate into measurable outcomes.
The initiative aligns with the broader objectives of ECOWAS Vision 2050, which seeks to promote regional integration, economic transformation and inclusive development.
Through the implementation of the strategy, ECOWAS aims to create a more integrated and accessible digital marketplace that enables businesses across the region to benefit from emerging opportunities in electronic commerce.
