The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, on Wednesday led a high-level delegation on a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Professor Abraham Onwunari Georgewill. The visit, held at the university’s main campus, aimed to extend an official invitation to the Vice Chancellor for the 2025 Ember Months National Townhall Meeting and explore avenues for research collaboration in road safety.
Mohammed underscored the importance of research-driven solutions in combating road traffic crashes, reshaping driving behavior, and sustaining a culture of safety on Nigerian roads. “As an agency committed to saving lives, we believe that strategic partnerships with institutions like UNIPORT are crucial to generating the knowledge and innovations needed to improve road safety outcomes,” he stated.
During the visit, the Corps Marshal also inspected the newly approved Drivers’ Training Proficiency Centre at the university. The facility is designed to enhance drivers’ education and promote safety awareness among students and staff, further embedding road safety consciousness within the academic community.
In his remarks, Professor Georgewill welcomed the Corps Marshal and praised his leadership, noting that it was the first time a Corps Marshal of the FRSC had visited the institution. He expressed the university’s readiness to partner with the Corps in research, innovation, and knowledge-sharing projects centered on road safety. “The University of Port Harcourt is fully committed to contributing to national development through meaningful collaborations, particularly with institutions like the FRSC that work for the safety and well-being of all Nigerians,” he said.
The visit marks a significant step toward strengthening academia-agency collaboration in support of safer roads and improved traffic management across the country.
