General Motors will launch two new electric vehicles over the next 18 months, the first step in an ambitious plan to have more than 20 such vehicles on sale by 2023, and begin production of hydrogen fuel cells at its Brownstown battery plant in Michigan by 2020.

Also on Sunday, the automaker showed three designs for potential future vehicles powered by batteries or fuel cells: a midsize luxury SUV that bore a Buick badge, a sleek larger crossover that looked like it would contain three rows of seats for Cadillac, and a tall, roomy vehicle that could be a future version of the Chevrolet Bolt.

“GM believes the future’s all electric,” company product development chief Mark Reuss said at the Design Dome on GM’s Warren Tech Center, just north of Detroit.

According to Deiroit free press, the 20-plus vehicles will include those with batteries, such as the Chevy Bolt, and fuel-cell vehicles that combine hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity. GM has been developing its fuel cell system with Honda since 2015.

“Our primary retail focus is the fast-growing market for crossover SUVs,” GM electric and autonomous vehicle chief Pam Fletcher said.

GM’s announcement comes as every major automaker is laying the groundwork for the industry’s shift to electric power.
