The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has postponed the proposed nationwide voter revalidation exercise until after the 2027 General Election.
The decision was reached at a meeting held on Friday, April 10, 2026, between the Commission and Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs), where key electoral matters were discussed.
In a statement issued by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, the Commission said the postponement followed extensive deliberations on the timing and scope of the exercise.
According to the statement, the voter revalidation exercise remains a critical component of INEC’s mandate to maintain a credible and up-to-date National Register of Voters. It is intended to verify and review existing voter records, ensure the accuracy of personal data, eliminate duplicate and ineligible entries, and strengthen the overall integrity of the voter register.
The exercise would also provide registered voters with the opportunity to confirm their details and make necessary corrections where required.
INEC, however, reaffirmed its commitment to conducting free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections, assuring Nigerians that all necessary preparations for the 2027 General Election remain on track.
