Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has donated a 1.9-hectare plot of land, valued at N3 billion, to the newly established North West Development Commission (NWDC) for the construction of its permanent headquarters in Kano.
The land, taken from the premises of Abubakar Rimi Television (ARTV), was given free of charge as part of the Kano State Government’s support for the commission’s establishment.
Governor Yusuf made the announcement while receiving the Chairman and management team of the NWDC at the Government House.
He also pledged to provide temporary office accommodation, along with necessary renovations, to ensure that the agency commences operations without delay.
“This donation is part of our commitment to ensuring the North West Development Commission succeeds in its mission,” the governor stated. “The region faces critical challenges, including insecurity, hunger, and malnutrition, and we must act swiftly to address them.”
He commended President Bola Tinubu for establishing the commission and praised the National Assembly for its swift approval, describing the initiative as a much-needed intervention for the region.
Governor Yusuf urged the NWDC to focus on projects that would improve socioeconomic development, social services, and environmental sustainability across the North West states.
“We expect the commission to prioritize programs that directly impact the lives of our people,” he said. “Kano State Government will fully support and provide an enabling environment for its operations.”
The Chairman of the NWDC, Isma’il Yakawada, expressed gratitude to the governor for the donation and assured that the commission would work within its mandate to drive meaningful development.
“Our visit to Kano is to formally introduce the leadership of the commission and strengthen collaboration with the state government,” Yakawada said. “We are committed to ensuring that the commission delivers on its objectives to uplift the North West region.”
During a visit to the allocated land, NWDC Managing Director, Prof. Shehu Abdullahi Ma’aji, also praised the governor’s gesture.
“We deeply appreciate this kind donation from Governor Yusuf,” he said. “This land, given free of charge, is a major step towards ensuring the commission has a strong foundation for its work.”
The North West Development Commission was recently established to address developmental challenges in the region, including insecurity, poverty, and infrastructure deficits. The headquarters in Kano is expected to serve as the central hub for coordinating interventions across the seven North West states.
