
Lafarge Africa Plc has announced the successful unveiling of the newly rehabilitated Independence Memorial Obelisk at the historic Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos—an iconic national landmark symbolising Nigeria’s freedom and heritage.
The rehabilitation project, executed in partnership with the Tafawa Balewa Square Management Board, focused on strengthening and restoring the monument while preserving its original architectural identity. The upgrade included structural reinforcement, aesthetic enhancements, accessibility improvements, and the meticulous restoration of symbolic carvings and historical inscriptions that capture Nigeria’s journey to independence.
According to Lafarge Africa, the restoration of the Obelisk reflects the company’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s development through projects that uphold national history, promote sustainability, and enhance the quality of life for future generations.
The unveiling ceremony drew several dignitaries and stakeholders who commended the initiative. In attendance were the MD/CEO of Lafarge Africa Plc, Lolu Alade-Akinyemi; Independent Non-Executive Director, Mrs. Adenike Ogunlesi; the Hon. Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole; and Lagos State Commissioner for Arts, Tourism and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, who represented the Executive Governor of Lagos State.
Also present were the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Trade & Investment, Senator Sadiq Suleiman Umar; Chairman, House Committee on Commerce, Hon. Ahmed Munir; Lagos State Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, Mrs. Folashade Bada Ambrose-Medebem; Managing Director of Tafawa Balewa Square, Lucia Shittu; members of the Lafarge Africa management team; and other distinguished guests.
The restored Obelisk now stands renewed and strengthened, reinforcing its place as a timeless symbol of national pride and Nigeria’s enduring path toward growth and unity.
