The Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) on Monday apprehended 175 vehicles for violating regulations governing the use of dealer number plates.
Under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018, dealer number plates are strictly intended for authorised activities, including test drives, vehicle inspections, delivery or collection of vehicles, and the movement of unregistered vehicles from ports or authorised dealer premises to designated locations.
The law prohibits the use of dealer plates for private daily commuting, continuous operation on public roads, or on vehicles that have already been sold and are awaiting permanent registration.
The Lagos State Government also warned motorists and vehicle dealers against the use of unregistered vehicles, vehicles without number plates, faded plates, fake or unauthorised registration numbers, and obscured plates.
According to VIS, dealer plates recovered from the affected vehicles will be confiscated, while the vehicles will undergo further investigation.
The government said violators could face enforcement actions, including impoundment and prosecution, in accordance with relevant traffic laws.
The Lagos State Government urged motorists and vehicle dealers to comply fully with the regulations, stressing that the enforcement is aimed at promoting accountability, proper vehicle identification and safety on Lagos roads.
