The Lagos State Government has begun installing modern concrete pontoons across selected jetties as part of ongoing efforts to upgrade waterways infrastructure under the €410 million Omi Eko Project.
Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Mr. Dayo Alebiosu, confirmed the development in a statement on Sunday, noting that the installations will significantly improve commuter experience and strengthen public confidence in water transportation.
Describing the project as a major step toward modernising the state’s water transport system, Alebiosu said the concrete floating pontoons—designed as flexible docking platforms—are already being mounted at Agboyi Ketu in Kosofe, Ijegun Egba in Amuwo Odofin, and Bayeku in Ikorodu. He added that more locations will be covered in the coming weeks.
He further disclosed that similar installations are planned for Ebute Ero on Lagos Island, Ijede in Ikorodu, Apa in Badagry, Mile 2 in Amuwo Odofin, Mowo in Ojo and other jetties marked for infrastructure upgrades.
“These pontoons are crafted from rigid concrete blocks designed to float and withstand wave pressure while providing stability,” Alebiosu explained. “The platforms eliminate the fear passengers feel when boarding from shaky wooden structures.”
According to him, the innovation creates a flat, stable boarding surface that feels like stepping onto solid ground. He added that the modular pontoons can also be deployed as temporary bridges during flooding or erosion.
Alebiosu noted that the ongoing upgrades include a six-sided pontoon model that enables 360-degree docking and efficient crowd movement, with Falomo Jetty currently operating a partial two-sided configuration.
He revealed that the project is jointly funded by the French Development Agency, the European Investment Bank and the European Union.
“This is more than infrastructure; it is about transforming how Lagosians move, work and connect,” the commissioner said. “We are building a safe, sustainable and competitive waterways network that complements our roads and rail.”
