The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has commenced a nationwide enforcement operation to remove alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and PET bottles below 200ml from circulation, in line with the Federal Government’s ban on the products.
City Business News reports that the nationwide exercise, which is being carried out across the six geopolitical zones, follows the closure of non-compliant manufacturing facilities and forms part of the agency’s sustained efforts to safeguard public health and curb the harmful effects of alcohol abuse.
As part of the operation, NAFDAC enforcement teams are conducting coordinated raids in markets, motor parks, retail outlets, bars, and other distribution channels to identify, seize, and remove the banned alcoholic products from circulation.
The agency warned that manufacturers, importers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers, transporters, and other stakeholders must immediately surrender any remaining stock of the prohibited products.
According to NAFDAC, continued possession, distribution, or sale of the banned alcoholic beverages constitutes a violation of the law and could result in seizure of the products, regulatory sanctions, and prosecution.
The agency explained that the enforcement exercise is designed to reduce underage drinking, harmful alcohol consumption, and substance abuse, particularly among children and young people.
NAFDAC also appealed to members of the public to support the campaign by avoiding the purchase of the banned products and reporting individuals or organisations involved in their production, distribution, or sale to the nearest NAFDAC office or through its dedicated toll-free line, 0800-1-623322.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public health and ensuring strict compliance with regulations governing the manufacture, distribution, and sale of alcoholic beverages in Nigeria.
