The Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) has inducted 103 newly qualified Authorised Dealing Clerks as part of efforts to strengthen professionalism, capacity and ethical standards in Nigeria’s capital market.
The inductees successfully completed the Exchange’s 15-day Automated Trading System (ATS) Brokers’ Certification Programme, which provides participants with training on market structure, trading procedures, compliance requirements and the operational framework of NGX.
Speaking at the induction ceremony, Chief Executive Officer of NGX, Jude Chiemeka, congratulated the new dealing clerks and urged them to uphold the highest standards of integrity, professionalism and ethical conduct.
Chiemeka said the programme was designed to strengthen the competence, capacity and character of aspiring market professionals.
According to him, the inductees had fulfilled the required academic and professional conditions and obtained the necessary regulatory approvals to practise as Authorised Dealing Clerks.
He also emphasised the importance of maintaining market integrity, noting that the ceremonial robes presented to the inductees symbolised their commitment to the ethical standards of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers (CIS) and the NGX Rulebook.
The NGX CEO reiterated the Exchange’s zero-tolerance stance towards market infractions and urged the new dealing clerks to maintain the highest standards of professional conduct throughout their careers.
Also speaking, the Doyen of the Market, Rasheed Yusuf, said the responsibilities of stockbrokers extend beyond the execution of trades to include facilitating capital raising, deepening market liquidity, providing investment guidance and expanding retail and diaspora participation.
“The Exchange and the capital market constitute a platform to turn around the fortunes of the Nigerian economy, and I encourage you to leverage every channel available to create impact,” Yusuf said.
He encouraged the inductees to remain proactive, continuously expand their knowledge and keep abreast of developments shaping Nigeria’s capital market.
Chairman of the Governing Council of the Association of Securities Dealing Houses of Nigeria (ASHON), Sehinde Adenagbe, and President and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers, Fiona Ahimie, also charged the new dealing clerks to adhere strictly to market rules and professional standards.
They emphasised the role of market practitioners in strengthening investor confidence and supporting the continued development of Nigeria’s capital market.
The induction brings additional qualified professionals into the securities market as NGX continues to strengthen the institutional capacity, professionalism and participation required to support the growth of Nigeria’s capital market.
