Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) has joined government agencies, regulators and key industry players in the newly inaugurated Joint Decarbonisation Working Group (JDWG), a strategic platform established to coordinate efforts aimed at reducing carbon emissions across Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.
The launch of the working group took place in Abuja, with NLNG represented by Umar Aboki and Temitope Ogedengbe.
Other members of the JDWG include representatives from the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, the National Council on Climate Change, the Federal Ministry of Environment, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC).
The working group is expected to strengthen collaboration among stakeholders by improving policy coordination, enhancing emissions monitoring, tracking and reporting, promoting the adoption of low-carbon technologies, supporting capacity building, encouraging cleaner production methods and facilitating access to climate financing.
The initiative will also contribute to Nigeria’s commitment to eliminate routine gas flaring by 2030, in line with its climate change and energy transition objectives.
NLNG said its participation in the Joint Decarbonisation Working Group reflects recognition of the company’s leadership in advancing decarbonisation initiatives within Nigeria’s energy sector.
The company noted that its involvement underscores its commitment to working closely with government and industry stakeholders to foster responsible development of Nigeria’s oil and gas resources while supporting the country’s transition to a lower-carbon economy.
The establishment of the JDWG is expected to provide a coordinated framework for implementing practical decarbonisation strategies that align Nigeria’s energy sector with global climate goals, while ensuring sustainable growth and competitiveness for the industry.
