The Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer, NLNG, Philip Mshelbila, has reiterated call for diversity of gas development globally.
The NLNG boss spoke at the 29th World Gas Conference (WGC2025) in Beijing, China, contributing to a high-level conversation on “The Diversity of Gas Development Globally.”
He shared insights drawn from NLNG’s operations and the broader African energy landscape, underscoring the role of natural gas as a vital pathway for equitable energy access and transition.
Philip noted that despite the Africa’s significant population growth and resource base, many countries still rely on biomass and diesel.
For gas to truly displace dirtier fuels, he emphasised, two fundamental barriers must be addressed: availability and affordability. Infrastructure development and smart policy frameworks are also not optional — they are essential.
He highlighted Nigeria’s Decade of Gas initiative, supported by NLNG, as a model for stimulating domestic gas utilisation. The initiative has stimulated more supply of LPG domestically and promoted CNG for transportation.
The initiative is helping to unlock the health and environmental benefits of clean energy access. This shift, he explained, is not only about emissions — it is about saving lives and creating a foundation for a sustainable future.
On policy, Dr. Mshelbila called for clarity, flexibility, and long-term vision. He pointed to the recent fiscal reforms on Deepwater gas in Nigeria as a positive step in attracting investment, while stressing that affordability must be embedded into the energy mix, particularly in developing economies.
