The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) and the Sierra Leone Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation Bureau have signed a landmark agreement to deepen cooperation in aviation safety through enhanced data sharing, joint investigations, and structured training programmes.
The agreement, signed at the NSIB headquarters in Abuja, was witnessed by members of the management teams of both institutions and is expected to strengthen regional collaboration in accident and incident investigation across West Africa.
Director General of the NSIB, Alex Badeh Jr, described the partnership as a reflection of a shared commitment to improving investigative capacity and ensuring safer skies in the region.
“This partnership reflects our collective commitment to maintaining high standards in aviation safety investigation across West Africa. It creates a clear pathway for deeper cooperation between Nigeria and Sierra Leone, strengthening the systems of both institutions,” he said.
Badeh noted that collaboration among investigators would enhance response time, improve the precision of findings, and reinforce the overarching goal of preventing future occurrences.
“When investigators share knowledge, tools, and experience, response time improves, findings become more precise, and the focus remains on preventing future occurrences. That is what this partnership is designed to achieve,” he added.
He further stated that the agreement underscores both organisations’ commitment to upholding global best practices as outlined by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), particularly the Standards and Recommended Practices contained in Annex 13 of the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation.
The collaboration is expected to enhance technical expertise, promote knowledge exchange, and strengthen institutional frameworks for aviation safety investigations within the West African sub-region.
