The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has pledged commitment to health and safety of workers in upstream oil and gas operations.
The Commission Chief Executive, NUPRC, Mrs. Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, said this when the management of Goshen Health Solutions paid a courtesy call on the NUPRC.
The CCE underscored the importance NUPRC places on the health and safety of workers and host communities, noting that these remain central to the Commission’s regulatory mandate.
The Goshen Health Solutions team, led by the CEO, Dr. Tolani Osunsanya, emphasized that while safety systems are relatively well established in the industry, the health component is still insufficiently addressed.
Dr Osunsanya gave a presentation which highlighted that health and safety are inseparable and that the lack of adequate focus on worker health ultimately weakens safety outcomes.
He further stressed the need to domesticate health and safety standards to reflect local realities.
The CEO also observed that existing safety standards were largely developed by industry experts, with limited contribution from medical professionals, creating gaps in addressing occupational health risks.
