Speaking at the celebration, held at St. Paul Catholic Church, Airport Road, Benin City, the Governor said the clergy’s service in God’s vineyard has drawn more Christians to God.

According to him, “Our father has lived a very illustrious life and a life of service.  His service in the vineyard of God has provided the opportunity for many Christian faithful to sustain personal connection and relationship with God.”

Obaseki said Ekpu and other Nigerian patriots, in the midst of the civil war, were called into the service of God and accelerated to become Bishops in the Catholic Church, adding, “50 years on, they have changed the face of the church in Nigeria.”

He said, “The role of the Catholic Church became significant and very prominent particularly after the civil war, because of the diligent work our father commenced as a Bishop of this Diocese. As a priest, he has risen to the pinnacle of his Episcopal calling and has seen it all. We will continue to cherish his wisdom and experience.
