Wife of the President, Dr. Mrs. Aisha Muhammadu Buhari has empowered 2000 women in Yola, Adamawa state.
A press statement explained that the event, organized by Aisha Buhari Foundation in collaboration with the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) witnessed the presence of the Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri and First Ladies of Ghana, Niger, Chad, Gambia and Cote D’Ivoire as well as many wives of Governors.
Mrs. Buhari said it is important to empower women because they require very little capital to grow their businesses and such empowerment is sure to affect the whole family and even the community. She called on the women to put the funds to proper use.
She commended the NDE, which she described as a partner in the empowerment of women and youths in the country.
Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo, First Lady of Ghana spoke at the occasion, commending the effort of Mrs. Buhari in improving the well-being of women and children, including through empowerment programmes, saying her projects will improve the well-being of women and youths. Citing the maternity complex, which was commissioned earlier in the day, she said it will save the lives of many women. “Every first lady is uniquely placed to make a difference in the lives of her people. Ours is not an elective position, yet so much is expected of us.” She said.
She noted that contrary to common perception, first ladies do not have easy access to funds, she therefore encouraged corporate institutions, NGOs, other foundations and individuals to support the work of Mrs. Buhari.
Director-General of NDE, Dr. Nasir Ladan said the programme was inspired by Mrs. Buhari’s effort at ensuring that women and youth who have been neglected in the past are now mainstreamed into the development process of the nation. He said so far, over 3 million Nigerians have received training in various skills. Breaking down the figures of beneficiaries, Dr. Ladan said 1000 women will receive financial support to improve their businesses, 550 will be trained in various vocational skills, 50 will be trained in mobile training workshop, while 400 will be trained in cosmetology.
According to Suleiman Haruna, Director of Information to Wife of the President,highlight of the event was the presentation of financial support to the 1000 women, which was conducted by Mrs. Buhari and other First ladies.
