Acting Corps Marshal, Dauda Biu, has directed all Federal Road Safety Corps commands nationwide to constitute mobile courts to try traffic offenders during the ember months.
Biu gave the directive on Thursday in Birnin Kebbi during the flag-off of special ember months patrol in Kebbi.
Represented by Zonal Commanding Officer, RS zone 10, ACM, Ramalan Yerima, the corps marshal explained that the courts must be thorough in their work.
“You are all aware that the yuletide is one of the periods when Nigerians travel across the length and breadth of the country, especially the Christian faithful.
“Owing to this development, our roads have always witnessed high vehicular traffic congestions, gridlock, road traffic crashes and attendant loss of lives and properties.
“This situation is further worsened by the excesses of motorists along our corridors which leave horrifying nightmares in the minds of all stakeholders, motorists, travellers, government, FRSC and other security agencies
“I direct that mobile courts sittings be conducted throughout the period across the federation.
“The corps will also pay first-rate focus on effective traffic control, failure to install or use speed limiting device by commercial vehicles, overloading, among others,” he said.
Biu said that the aim was to ensure the free flow of traffic during the period, adding that all commands should engage in mega public enlightenment and sensitization campaign on safe road culture.
He said that the aim was to ensure the free flow of traffic, reduction in road crashes and proper enforcement of traffic laws nationwide.
The corps marshal said that the FRSC would collaborate with relevant stakeholders including FERMA and National Network on Emergency Rescue Services, to ensure a friendly festive period.
Gov. Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi, represented by his Deputy, Alhaji Samaila Yombe- Dabai, commended the FRSC for organising the campaign in its efforts to tackle road crashes.
“We are reiterating our commitment in helping the security agencies to strengthen peace and reduce crime as well as road crashes in the state.
“We will not relent in our promise of protecting lives and properties of our people,” the governor added.
Bagudu urged motorists to abide by traffic rules and regulations, so as to reduce road traffic crashes.
Earlier, the Sector Commander, Haruna Aliyu, said the objective of the campaign was to reduce road traffic crashes to the barest minimum.
He commended the state governor for his support to the FRSC in the state, and called on all stakeholders to help in the safe-roads campaign.
Aliyu advised motorists to avoid speeding, overloading and use of unsafe tyres, so as to arrive their destinations alive. nan
