The FCT under-16 boys football team on Saturday defeated their Kano state counterparts 1-0 at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano to win the annual Ramat under-16 boys football tournament.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the competition, now in its 39th edition, was organised in memory of a late Nigerian Head of State, Gen. Murtala Ramat Mohammed.
In the final match of the competition, organised by the Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON), the FCT side scored the only goal in the second half.
The competition’s third-place match was won by the Gombe state team, which defeated their Ogun counterparts 2-0.
Meanwhile, in the finals of the athletics competition organised on the sidelines of the annual tournament, Kaduna state won all the races.
They won the 100 metres, 200m and 4 x100m races.
Speaking during the tournament’s closing ceremony, the president of YSFON, Nasiru Gawuna, said Kano state would continue to support the federation to achieve its goals.
Gawuna, who is also the Deputy Governor of Kano State, said the state was particularly impressed with the efforts to immortalise the late Mohammed.
NAN reports that Mohammed was assassinated on Feb. 13, 1976 in Lagos.
“I also commend YSFON for their efforts at discovering and nurturing local talents for Kano State and Nigeria as a whole,” Gawuna added.
The Kano State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Kabiru Lakwaya, while speaking at the occasion reiterated the state government’s commitment to supporting activities that would make youths self-reliant.
“Anything done to immortalise the late former Nigerian leader and hero is also welcomed,” he said.
Lakwaya also commended the teams which participated in the competition for their discipline throughout the tournament. nan
