Worried by cases of overloading with human beings and goods in Gusau, Zamfara state, the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dr Boboye Oyeyemi has declared a major operation against the menace, giving a marching order to the sector commander to immediately eradicate the practice with all the might of the command.
The Corps Marshal made the declaration over the weekend while addressing staff of Zamfara state Sector Command of the FRSC during his visit to the state capital.
In a press release by Bisi Kazeem, Head, Media Relations and Strategy, FRSC in Gusau, Oyeyemi described as “unacceptable” a situation where human beings are loaded with animals in the booth of vehicles, noted that such acts which are common in the state must be brought to an end forthwith through an aggressive public enlightenment and enforcement by the command, commencing from Monday. ‘It is appalling to still see human beings and animals being conveyed in the booth of vehicles in many areas of the state. Aside such practice being dangerous, it is also socially unacceptable,” he stated.
‘As a demonstration of our concern against the practice, I am directing the sector commander to commence a major operation as fromMonday with a view to eradicating the practice, not only within the state capital, but all parts of the state including the neighbouring areas,” he added.
The Corps Marshal further directed the Zonal Commanding Officer of Zone RS10 Headquarters, Sokoto, to replicate the campaign in all the states under the zone, saying he would be personally reviewing the operations to determine the level of compliance upon which the commanding officers could be rewarded or sanctioned in line with the ideals of his management on reward and punishment for hard working and indolent staff.
On indiscipline, the Corps Marshal warned staff against violation of FRSC disciplinary codes, vowing that he would ensure that any staff that violates the disciplinary codes of the Corps must face the necessary punishment to deter others. “You all promised to abide by the disciplinary standards of the Corps upon which you were recruited and trained to became staff of the FRSC. Whoever,therefore, goes against the clearly stated laws of the Corps is deliberately testing the will of the leadership, and such affront to constituted authority would not go unpunished,” Oyeyemi stated.
Speaking on staff welfare, the Corps Marshal reiterated his Management’s commitment to pursuing policies that would make service in the FRSC by staff not only conducive and productive, but worthwhile after service. According to him, the apathy associated with life of some staff after service for those who did not make adequate preparation for post service life, compelled his Management to initiate such policies as post service scheme, one staff, one house project and embarking on reforms in staff cooperative scheme to make it more responsive to immediate and long term needs of the staff.
The FRSC boss enjoined the staff nationwide to embrace the staff welfare policies and programmes put in plac by Management to address their major welfare needs of the staff and implored them to increase their monthly savings in the spirit of saving for the rainy days after service.
While inspecting the state sector command office complex under construction in Gusau, the Corps Marshal commended the Sector Commander for the quality of work done and expressed appreciation to the Zamfara state government for providing the required moral and technical support, which led to the positive results attained within a short period of commencing the project. He expressed optimism that the building would be completed on time for commissioning and use of the command for enhanced operations and administrative activities in the state.
Oyeyemi promised to sustain his current focus on infrastructural development for the Corps, noting that work has been completed or nearing completion in four states of the federation where the FRSC is currently constructing permanent office structure. He particularly thanked the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari for the moral and logistics support for the Corps, saying the improved service delivery being offered to the people through the Corps’ operational and rescue capabilities are evidence of such support. He thanked all the relevant stakeholders for supporting the activities of FRSC and promised to sustain the Corps’ activities beyond Easter in the determination to make the nation’s roads safer for all.
In a related development, the Corps Marshal has called on members of NYSC Road Safety Club to remain dedicated in serving the cause of road safety through public enlightenment programmes. Oyeyemi made the call while addressing members of the Road Safety Club at the Zamfara state sector command who organised a special parade in his honour. He thanked them for their contribution to the development of the FRSC, and gave assurances that those of then that show interest in joining the FRSC after their service year would be given support yo realise their ambition.
