The Oyo State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Thursday organised training on road safety tips for children in Ibadan, the state capital.
The event was part of the command’s activities to mark the first edition of its Children’s Day celebration.
The Sector Commander, Mrs Uche Chukwurah, said the exercise was designed to catch the children young and create a safer motoring environment.
Chukwurah further said that educating the children on safety tips would reduce fatal road crashes.
According to her, road crash is the second leading cause for death of children and young adults in Nigeria and the world generally.
“If we catch the children young at this age, I’m sure the road will be safer than what it is today.
“Children are advised to be very careful when crossing the road.
“They should encourage their parents to use the seat belt and not speed whenever they are taking them to school.
“I expect them to be their parents’ watchdogs and I pray they obey traffic rules and regulations,” she said.
The FRSC boss said that everyone had a role to play in nurturing the children to be strong and independent.
He described children as “the smile and most treasured possession on earth”.
Speaking on behalf of the children, Famade Inioluwa, a student of PISLIB DeVasity School, Ibadan, commended FRSC for its efforts aimed at reducing road crashes.
