The Lagos State Government has approved a three-month rebate window for motorists to replace faded and unreadable vehicle number plates, in a renewed move to enhance road safety, improve vehicle identification, and strengthen security across the state.
The approval by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was disclosed by the Permanent Secretary of the Motor Vehicles Administration Agency (MVAA), Mr Rasheed Muri-Okunola, who described the initiative as a proactive and citizen-friendly measure aimed at promoting compliance while easing the financial burden on vehicle owners.
Muri-Okunola explained that the condition of vehicle number plates is critical to effective traffic management, crime detection, and public safety, noting that illegible or faded plates often hinder the work of law enforcement agencies and traffic officials.
“Clear and well-maintained number plates are essential for vehicle identification and security. This three-month rebate provides motorists with sufficient time to replace worn-out plates at a reduced cost, while contributing to safer and better-regulated roads in Lagos,” he said.
He noted that the rebate applies to vehicle owners whose number plates have become worn, faded, or unclear over time due to prolonged use and exposure to weather conditions. Motorists are therefore encouraged to take advantage of the window by visiting the MVAA One Stop Centre in Oshodi or any MVAA station across the state to complete the replacement process.
According to the Permanent Secretary, the initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to balancing enforcement with empathy by encouraging voluntary compliance through incentives rather than penalties.
He added that beyond improving appearance, legible number plates play a crucial role in curbing traffic violations, supporting investigations, and enhancing the effectiveness of the state’s digital vehicle tracking and security systems.
“This is more than a regulatory exercise; it is a public safety initiative. Standardised and clearly visible number plates improve efficiency across transportation management, security operations, and emergency response,” Muri-Okunola said.
He assured motorists of seamless service delivery throughout the rebate period and cautioned against the use of unauthorised agents, stressing that all replacements must be carried out only at government-approved centres.
Muri-Okunola reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to innovative and people-focused policies that prioritise safety, convenience, and accountability, while urging residents to cooperate with authorities in building a safer and more orderly transport system.
