The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) has concluded a high-level trip to Japan, securing strengthened partnerships and technical collaboration toward establishing Nigeria’s first modern End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) recycling ecosystem.
As part of the visit, the NADDC delegation led by its Director General, Otunba Oluwemimo Joseph Osanipin engaged Kaiho Industry Co. Ltd., a global leader in End of life vehicle, where they received detailed briefings on internationally certified recycling frameworks and toured dismantling, material recovery and eco-friendly waste treatment facilities. Kaiho reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigeria through a structured, multi-phase plan that includes a pre-feasibility study, factory design, equipment installation, heavy machinery deployment and extensive capacity-building programmes in both Japan and Nigeria.
This synergy is expected to aid the development of the Auto used parts market in Nigeria.
The Council also held strategic discussions with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization – Investment and Technology Promotion Office (UNIDO–ITPO) Japan, discussed Nigeria’s newly adopted ELV and Automotive Waste Recycling Regulations (2024). UNIDO commended the framework and explored expanded avenues of cooperation, including engagement with JICA and pathways to attract Japanese investors and technology partners into Nigeria’s emerging ELV sector.
To reinforce diplomatic support for these engagements, NADDC paid a courtesy visit to the Nigerian Embassy in Tokyo, briefing the Chargé d’Affaires, Mrs. Folashade Shobande, on the mission’s objectives and investment opportunities within Nigeria’s automotive landscape.
The Embassy pledged continued facilitation of investor linkages and industry-focused collaborations with Japanese stakeholders.
Rounding off the trip, the delegation met with the leader of the Nigerian community in Japan, Mr Emeka, sensitizing them on the ELV Regulations and other ongoing automotive development initiatives, while emphasizing the need for collective support in ensuring vehicles that meet global standards are exported to Nigeria( especially pre owned) .
The mission recorded significant progress toward building a safe, environmentally sound and economically viable ELV recycling industry, key to advancing Nigeria’s circular economy, job creation goals and sustainable automotive development.
